By the time they stopped to eat, which was only just over an hour later, they had sketched out a timeline from the warehouse raid up to today and the murder of Jamie. There was more information out there to do with the raid and the personnel involved than Simon had imagined. One thing was obvious—there was much more to this situation than first met the eye.
He wanted to keep going. Cain said he needed thinking time, and Simon’s stomach reminded him that he hadn’t eaten since toast at 6:00 a.m.
He searched for everything he needed for the mac and cheese, and added a pile of crispy bacon to the menu, along with coffee and defrosted juice. The pantry area had pasta to last about twenty years, and the coffee, considered explicitly vital to anyone trapped inside this place. There might only be a small supply of the good stuff, but instant would at least keep them going.
The bacon caught a little, and Simon discovered a little switch that opened the shutters in the kitchen. Not sufficient to see out, but more than enough to get a breath of fresh air. With everything ready, he went to find Amy, knocking on her door and then pushing it open. She was on the side of the bed, her feet on the floor, her hands loose in her lap.
“Hungry?” he asked.
“Not really.” Then, with visible effort, she stood and ran fingers through her long hair. “I feel sick.”
“Can I get you anything else?”
“I’ll come out. I can’t stay in here forever, and I need to face this somehow. But, Simon, I’ve got a question for you.” She looked uncertain. “Jamie. He was one of the good ones, right? You said he was.”
“There is no way he was involved in any of this shit.”
She crossed to him and they hugged briefly. “I do need to tell the school I won’t be in for a while. Do we have a phone I can use?”
“I think Cain will already sorted it.”
“Still, I should call them.” She was insistent but Simon knew Cain wouldn’t like the break in security to alert anyone where they were.
“Cain is right. We shouldn’t do anything that will lead anyone here.”
“Not even an email?”
“Not even that.”
They parted, and Amy drew back her shoulders. “Okay, then do you have coffee?”
“Limited good stuff but enough crap instant to last us about ten years.”
“God help us if we’re stuck here that long.”
